Over the past 26 years, we have watched a project run by ‘Computer Geeks’ turn into almost every household and workplace’s number one commodity. It now opens a whole new race for technology. The Internet race.
Having started out as a Free world of Information and opportunity, it has quickly grown into the worlds number one resource hub. Now the race is on to stake your claim for your small acre or two of Internet Real Estate.
The Internet Race is On
The worldwide web has grown in the past 26 year from being a network of computer geeks to nowadays being a peice of technology that everyone relies on for almost everything form banking, shopping, business right down to general information. From the early days of the internet where the users built everything, we have seen many companies rise into massive corporations by utilizing the situation together with the expanding technology available.
What is the Internet Race?
So we have watched the rise of these small bedroom projects booming out of the ashes of the old system and it has to be said, that 26 years is a short time.
Nowadays, the Internet has over 5 Billion users every Day. Considering the Worlds Population is only 6 Billion, then it’s pretty much safe to say, Nearly everyone uses the internet once a day at least.
So what we need to look at now, is where it’s going. If this is the new world of technology, then where exactly do we fit in to this scheme of things and can we make money by doings so. At least enough to draw a decent wage we can live on comfortably.
But first, let us have a look at where things have come from. For it is only by looking at the past, we can determine the route for the Future.
In the Beginning
Back in the very early days when the internet was launched in 1995, nobody knew what a link never mind a hyperlink was. If you wanted someone to come to your website, you had to give them instructions on how to find your address. You didn’t have ultra fast Google Indexing back then.
But lots of different software and plugins were built by enthusiasts who loved to share the freeware they had created. This grew to the rise of many platforms with user friendly interfaces that people could use with minimal hassle and no required Techie knowledge.
I remember around 2006-08 time, Myspace really took off as a user friendly ‘You Space’ Platform that gave its users an opportunity to tinker with their profile pages URL coding and add Profile Templates which they could Glam up as much as you liked on websites devoted specifically to this. I remember Site Glitter being one such site.
This was once the number one site for musicians and bands to promote themselves. It gave them a page where they could upload a Profile picture, Up to 10 Demo Songs that would be embedded upon the single page profile. They could include a description of themselves and upcoming events there on the one page for a visitor to glance at.
Then Facebook bough it over and they decided to break it up into different pages for different things. Ie, a separate page for your music uploads and photos, etc. As a result, it just put people off and drove the toward Facebook.
Tis was a shame in my opinion, as I think Myspace had far more to offer, than Facebook do, even today.
I don’t know if any of you ever had the opportunity to experience the technology that Stickam provided. Even to this day, I’ve still never found a social media platform that had as much to offer as Stickam, and that platform has been closed down for almost a decade.
It gave you everything you needed to do what you liked. Like Myspace, you could pimp your profile up and could also have an auto play list that would play either Music or Videos you had uploaded.
But it also had a ‘Go Live’ function that allowed you to stream live with the ability to stream Live Webcam, static photo, Video Stream or any other Video Stream as well as Audio Stream and Text Chat.
It was everything you needed and it also gave you an HTML for embedding your live stream on your own website or anywhere else on line you chose. Perfect cockpit for your own TV or Radio Station.
Unfortunately, as good things have a habit of coming to an end, Stickam which had always been self funded by those keen enthusiasts that built and supported it, could no longer afford to maintain a site so powerful and busy as it was. It had to start adding advertisements which began to slow the site down and get in the way of broadcasting and from there it spiralled downward. Eventually Stickam was bought out by Facebook and closed down.
The Rise of the Giants
In many ways you have to admire some of these guys ingenuity when it comes to rising a massive corporation from a bedroom operation. What once was a website project, is now the worlds web ambassador in its fields.
Mind you, that’s not to say that there is no doubt many counts of shrewd business and even underhand deals going on, as with any massive corporation. But this is where we’re at.
So we can sulk about it, or get with it and keep ourselves clear of its path, if not make some money on the way. Here’s a look at a few of such companies that have pretty much rose from nothing to some of the world leaders..
Well, if there was ever a case of a kid playing around with junk in his bedroom and one – Lo and behold! – He’s Invented the spaceship!”, Googles story has to be it.
Google started off as a bedroom project that indexed all websites that had been launched and arranged a program that allowed its users to type in what they were looking for and Google would find them the best result. This was done by various algorithms that Google issues to find the most relevant content to what the user is seeking.
However, with good marketing strategy and reinvestment back into the company, Google were soon able to Log the Worlds surface with Google maps and with it a whole bunch of plugins and web tools.
In fact, you can actually run an entire business from one google account. They have basically become, the guyts of the Internet.
Jeff Bezos caught onto a good Idea many years ago and has since nurtured it in a way a Marketplace Warden would take a vested intertest in many of the stalls in the marketplace that he runs. Bezos has done that on the online marketplace.
The Amazon Marketplace
Back when the concept of selling your stuff online was first taking off and online marketplaces were on the rise. Initially as Yahoo groups and eventually sites like Gumtree or even Craigslist,
Technology soon moved things on to having Automated Marketplaces Like eBay, where anyone could buy and sell their used gear or if they wanted, sell brand new gear. Amazon and Ebay were both in the same league as being Online Marketplaces where anyone could buy and sell stuff. However, Amazon were always stricter on what could be sold and only allowed second hand items in really good condition to be sold.
Amazons Logistics Growth
This was to fast establish the whole rise in the eCommerce business and at the same time Bezos was already offering the same services, only taking it a stage further. He opened warehouses and was able to offer logistics.
From here his company Amazon has grown and anyone wanting to run an online Amazon Store can do so without any need to even see their stock let alone handle it. Amazon provide all the labour.
After years of this, it has provided Amazon with the perfect records for what sells and what doesn’t. With the profit they have made, they are now able to cut into te market here there and everywhere in various niches and as they have the money and connections, they can and will eventually take over the monopoly of that particular item or category.
So, in a way, everyone who has been using Amazon to buy or sell things, has in turn been helping them tur into ‘The Shop’ which is possibly where it will end up. But in the meantime we have the chance to do what we can to stake our own bit of the Internet, as we shall discuss i this article.
Okay. So there was Mark Zuckerberg sitting there in his bedroom about 15 years ago. He created a Social Media Platform that allowed people to share their family photos or photos of friends. Also providing a grouping algorithm that let you catch up with old friends. Now, he’s possibly the owner of one of the powerful companies in the world.
Facebook took quite a dramatic rise very quick around 12 years ago just due to the fact that you could not only catch up with those you hadn’t seen for a long time. But you could also speak to anyone anywhere in the world at no International call rate due to the messenger function. This made it very popular. Good Move Mark!
The Place to Be
The Functions Facebook has to offer (ie, Pages, Groups, Events and so on) also made this very popular.
Many local businesses all started using Facebook. Many shops and local services would use this as their only internet presence.
So, of course, this meant that if any customers wanted to even look at these pages, they too would need an account. Another shrewd move, if not a bit cheeky.
Building a Database
In 2015, there was a big shout about Facebook having sold much of the Information that it was collecting to Analytics Research Company Cambridge Analytica. Now at the time, the big shout was that people felt betrayed that Facebook had sold their statistics to another company for analysis and ‘How Dare They’ and so on.
The thing is, when you join Facebook, before you submit your details to register, you accept the terms and conditions. In those terms and conditions, you accept that anything you upload or post to Facebook, belongs to Facebook.
So if you are going to put up information, don’t be surprised someone may have used that info. That’s what you agree to when you Join Facebook.
Besides, there’s loads of ways you can also be the Third Party yourself and use Facebook statistics and Info to do your own research if you need to.
A Big Entity
Today, Facebook have certainly become a force to be reckoned with. Bu the Introduction of their ‘Fool Proof’ easy to use App.
It has allowed many many more users to use Facebook who would never use any other page elsewhere on the Internet. To them, Facebook IS the Internet.
Did you know that Facebook now have their own Satellites? That might not sound that incredible. Satellites are nothing new right? No.
But how many other companies can say they OWN the satellite as well as the technology to make sure everyone can contact each other through that satellite?
And how many can do all that AND run the actual network that does it, with everything that in itself, Facebook, has to offer.
In some places, Facebook IS the Internet.
Take for example some of the Third World countries in South America, the Far East and Africa. Many of the Local Internet Providers there provide Internet at a reasonable price.
A reasonable price that is to the few who have the money. As for the many who don’t, then sometimes the cost of just one days Internet would cost them about 4 months wages.
Then came Uncle Mark. By sponsoring Schemes where people in Poverty can get access to their own phones, Installed of course with the Facebook App.
This App, just like here in many of the Western Countries will come Free and will not affect your Data Allowance. So in a country where Data Allowances out of their affordability, Facebook is the only access to the Internet that they’ll get.
Join the Internet Race
Although, when you look at these big companies, it can be quite daunting and you may even find yourself thinking ‘What’s the point. I’m beat before I start’. But that’s far from the case.
The Internet may be a good 26 already underway, and we can now see the shape that it’s forming. It doesn’t mean that it still doesn’t have a long way to go.
For example, Facebook may be massive. But it doesn’t bring anything of much value to the table. It’s all regurgitation of Third Party Links, and there’s still a whole land of unspoiled soil out there in those links. So become one of them.
Get your Own ‘Internet Real Estate’
There are many ways that you can go out and get your self known online and stake your claim as soon as possible, while it’s still relatively quiet.
Whether it be your own website or blog, your own YouTube Channel Facebook account or page, or other social media or bloggers forum etc, you should still have a domain that you can call yours and use this as your focal point.
From here you can;
- Link to Video Channels (ie YouTube, Vimeo, etc)
- Link to Facebook and Other Social Media Channels.
- Create your own content that will be YOURS. This means no company can come and use it and profit from it without you seeing a penny, which may often be the case with Facebook and other platforms.
- No Need to Worry or rely upon any Third Party Website deciding whether or not your account is allowed to be and whether or not they choose to close you down.
- If your project leads to being successful, with your own website and domain, you can always sell your business. In fact, often this can prove to be quite a lucrative enterprise.
Create your own website
Having your own website is probably the best option. Certainly the One I’d recommend, even if you do use multiple other methods. This gives you a base that’s YOURS. This is your very own piece of Internet Property. This is always somewhere you can direct your followers back to.
It also belongs to YOU and nobody else. that means you don’t need worry that you log in one day and Facebook, YouTube or whoever has just deleted your account and all your hard work with it. This is your Online Land.
It doesn’t have to be ultra snazzy and you can even make one really cheap or Free. But it will be yours either way.
Start a Blog
Running a regular blog can be a great way to get traffic and build your sites authority. This will go a long way in Google Rankings too. As your following grows, you can bend and shape your content as you go and use it to monetise your efforts. There are no limits as to what you can blog about.
I’d recommend blogging about something that you already have a keen interest in though, as this will give you the motivation to soldier on through when your business is at its toughest time.
Open a Webstore
If you have something you’d like to sell or already sell on Amazon, eBay or any of the bigger marketplaces, you can always create your own webstore. This will cut out the Amazon fees and will allow you to offer your regular customers a discount from the money you save from the fees.
You may want to keep it small to a niche, preferably something you already have an interest in. This will not only lower your competition but will also let you focus on something you have an active interest in already something you already have an Interest in.
This will make your job a whole lot easier and enjoyable than trying to sell something that you wouldn’t even buy yourself.
The possibilities are endless
At the end of the day, when you buy a web domain and create a website, its yours! Simple as that!
You can use it for anything you want.
You may want to maintain a minimal presence and just have a single page site with a few details about yourself. You can also include your business and a contact method, often a phone number or email address.
Or you could go full on at running a completely online business. The choice is entirely up to yourself. There’s no limits. You may also be interested in my article;
What Niche to Start a business in 2021
You can use it to do anything you want with, and very soon, i think that more and more people will do exactly this. Now that people are discovering that the whole ‘Internet thing’ doesn’t actually bite and isn’t as scary as they thought over the past years covid restrictions pushing people online, I think many more people will create their own site. So best to get a head start before the highway jams up.
